'BENNELONG CUP 2017
Eight years ago the new Federal Member for Bennelong, Mr John Alexander, had an idea which he shared with Table Tennis Australia.
From this idea, with the financial assistance of the Hyundai Motor Company, all schools in the Bennelong Electorate were offered free table tennis equipment. He deliberately made the offer available to both Public and Private Schools.
A by product of this initiative is the Annual Bennelong Cup for Schools, held this year on Friday 27 October at the Ryde Community & Sports Centre .
A total of 98 students arrived at the venue around 8.30am to register for the competition which commenced half an hour later with the first round featuring Primary School boys and girls. High School students followed soon after.
Mr Alexander arrived shortly after and graciously made himself available for photo opportunities and discussions with any of the players and supporters.
The competition was split into sections of
Primary Section – Boys
Primary Section – Girls
Junior High Section – Boys
Junior High Section – Girls
Senior High Section – Boys
Fierce but friendly competition continued during the day with the finals being completed by the allocated 2pm time.
The medallists in the competition were then presented with their medals which they proudly displayed before returning to school.
The medals were shared between
Primary Boys- Gold Carlingford West Public School, Silver Meadowbank Public School No. 1, Bronze Meadowbank Public School No. 2 and Epping Heights Public School
Primary Girls- Gold St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School Marsfield, Silver Epping Heights Public School, Bronze Meadowbank Public School
Junior High Boys Gold Marsden High School, Silver Epping Boys High School No. 2, Bronze to both Epping Boys High School No.1 and 5
