Sportsmanship the winner!
The 8th annual Bennelong Cup Schools’ Table Tennis Competition was again a smashing success this year, with over 40 teams from local schools participating and competing at ELS Hall Kent Rd North Ryde last Monday 5 November.
Event founder John Alexander OAM MP, the Federal Member for Bennelong, congratulated the students for their spirit of competition: “Well done to the winning students and the schools! Seeing all the young people, from so many different cultural backgrounds, coming together positively and engaging with each other, in the spirit of competition, was gratifying.
“That’s why I started this tournament, to promote engagement and understanding between youngsters of all backgrounds via playing sport, this ultimately promotes a more harmonious and respectful multicultural community, where we can all win!”
Vice President of Table Tennis NSW Ted Davis said: “We were thrilled to be asked by John Alexander to partner with him to put on this event. It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to showcase the sport and promote it to the young people of Bennelong.”
Event sponsor Hyundai Australia funded the purchase of a table tennis table for every school in Bennelong, and provided the tables for the competition. Hyundai’s General Manager of External Affairs Bill Thomas said: “We’re proud to be part of the local Bennelong community, and of our Korean heritage, we will always seek to support local initiatives that promote positive engagement between young people of many different backgrounds.”
Riverside Business Chamber and Andrew Hill of AJH Sports Marsfield also provided much needed support without which the event would not have been the success it was.
