Tom Boyd's 90th Birthday - Kiama TT Club

I was privileged to be invited to the Kiama Table tennis Club celebration of Tom Boyd’s 90th birthday.

It was obvious the esteem in which Tom is held as there were approximately sixty people present at the function with, I believe without exception, all were table tennis players.

Tom, along with his wife Joy, has been responsible for the setting up of the Kiama club and its ongoing success.

Tom has always been a player who does not like to highlight the success he has enjoyed in our game. As a consequence the Kiama players were extremely surprised to learn that he is a sixteen times Australian Veterans Table Tennis Champion.

He has competed in the Australian Veterans Championships almost every year from the inception of the event and in fact he and Joy were instrumental in ensuring the event commenced at all.

Perhaps the greatest thing about Tom is his dedication to our game, and in particular in Kiama where he is present at virtually all playing sessions and you can be assured that if any piece of equipment requires repair he will do it immediately.

Table Tennis is privileged to have players of the calibre of Tom involved in our game and we congratulate him on attaining the age of ninety and wish him many more birthday celebrations.

On Monday 4 November, 2019, 80 excited school students arrived at the Macquarie University Table Tennis venue to compete in the annual Hyundai Cup competition.

The competition, which is now in its 9th year, was the brainchild of the Federal Member for Bennelong, Mr John Alexander.

Mr Alexander, with the support of the Hyundai Corporation, arranged for every school in his electorate, whether public or private, to be provided with table tennis tables with one of the additional benefits being the annual Bennelong Cup competition.

The competition was split into Primary and Secondary Schools with Andrew Hill doing the organising of the Primary Sections where the majority of the students were to compete. Andrew has run this portion for the last two years and has received praise from all the teachers involved.

After the competition was played the Medals were presented to the following:

Jessy Chen's Inspirational Journey!

Jessy Chen, determined to represent Australia on the biggest stage (Photo: Josh Griffen)

Article by Simon Daish

Chen Junjian, nicknamed 'Jessy', has established himself as one of Oceania's top table tennis stars and has great ambitions of representing Australia at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

However, Jessy's journey to table tennis stardom began amongst the backdrop of devastating circumstances over 10 years ago.

Jessy and his family decided to make the move from southern China to relocate to the Solomon Islands during his teenage years for work. Shortly upon arrival the family were targeted as part of a violent protest movement in 2006, leaving Jessy in intensive care.

Following the incident, Jessy’s traumatic experience was compounded by suffering from extreme blood loss and a heart attack – he also learnt that he would have to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Unable to return to China, Jessy and his family were evacuated to Australia where he spent a year in recovery, and ultimately where his sporting journey began. Offered as part of his rehabilitation programme, Jessy decided to take up table tennis and hasn’t looked back since.

Now Jessy has developed not just into one of the finest players Australia has to offer but also one of the biggest stars from the entire Oceania continent, a statement he further proved earlier this year.

Demonstrating his talent with men’s singles class 2-3 gold at the 2017 Para Oceania Championships in Suva, Jessy added another title to his collection at the 2019 edition of the event held in Darwin back in May with a fantastic display in the men’s singles class 3-5 competition.

Two times a continental champion, making the people of Australia extremely proud in the process, Jessy doesn’t want to stop there; he wants to pay his adoptive country back in the best way possible, as he eyes up a possible selection for Team Australia at next summer’s Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.

Whether we see Jessy in Tokyo or not, his story is still undeniably touching and something for young players across the world to aspire to.
