Westchester Table Tennis Club Taking Paddle to Parkinson’s

The Westchester Table Tennis Club in Pleasantville, New York is one of the best clubs in the US with hundreds of members for open play and the nation’s best monthly tournaments.

Westchester TTC is owned by Will Shortz who is the long-time crossword puzzle editor for the New York Times. They also have a therapeutic program for seniors to help battle Parkinson's disease. Table-tennis is now more often recommended by doctors to help battle dementia. Exercise keeps the body young and table-tennis may be the best sport to keep the brain young.

I went to Westchester for their monthly tournament in December 2015 and after not starting too well, I nearly advanced out of my open singles group and won one event. I plan to go to fly to one on September 24 as I still look forward to playing and competing. Westchester TTC manager Robert Roberts gave me a ride to the airport last time and said he will do so both ways for this coming tournament so they treat their players well!

World’s Fastest Sport - Table-Tennis or Badminton?

Badminton is considered the world’s fastest sport based on the speed the birdie which can travel over 200 mph. Table-tennis ball speeds can reach 60-70 mph at highest due to the light weight of ball and air resistance but has a higher frequency of hits in the rallies due to the closer proximity of the players.

In one match analyzed, table-tennis averaged 2.00 hits per second where as badminton averaged 1.72 hits per second. The badminton birdie travels faster but table-tennis requires a faster reaction time. Which is the fastest sport? It depends on what you look at.

Table-tennis and badminton have a lot of similarities. Both require extremely fast reaction speed, agility, and quickness where the top athletes in the medal-winning nations being among the best conditioned athletes out of all Olympic athletes in all sports. They are both big sports in Asia where the top athletes are well-known celebrities in their home countries. Both are small sports in the US that the general public doesn’t understand much or respect. Both also have one Scandinavian country that has risen to the top of the sport, Sweden for table-tennis and Denmark for badminton. Denmark has one Olympic men’s singles champion, Poul-Erik Hoyer Larsen, and Sweden has one Olympic men’s singles champion, Jan-Ove Waldner.
